Reddit legal befl
Law student here. Am I the only one who doesn’t think she’s going to spend the rest of her life in prison? I see people talking about long sentences and I frankly don’t believe the evidence they’ll find will be powerful enough to lock her up forever. I wish it would, just being realistic. There are so many things we can see as wrong and fcked up that do not technically violate any laws and will not hold up in court. None of the fcked up messaging they were pushing with Connexions is chargeable unless there’s solid, verifiable evidence specific actions took place - such as if they were to confess (or the kids testified) to starving the kids, abandonment, etc. I’m part of the lgbtq+ community and the shit Connexions has preached is sickening, but 99% has no legal bounds. And as much as I never really agreed with Ruby’s parenting, I don’t believe she was always this bad. Strict, sheltering, overbearing, sure. But a lot of those qualities seem to be common with Mormons. I believe she’s going to be judged on the most recent events and specifically the verifiable charges, which at first glance seem to be child abuse. Even if the older kids testify, saying your mom sent you to bed without a meal because you were acting out or you weren’t allowed to have friends isn’t punishable by law. Being chained up and malnourished (which constitutes MONTHS of abuse) is. This is pretty bad for her, but unfortunately I don’t believe it’s going to be as bad as we were hoping for.
ETA: In case I wasn’t clear, I’m not defending Ruby in any way and she’s 100% losing custody of those kids even if she only gets a few years in prison. She could also go for the mentally insane route and end up in a facility instead.

Yeah I feel this is obvious even as someone with no education in law. The top comment’s 6-18month + probation suggestion seems most likely.

I agree w all of this. It’s not illegal to be an asshole. Maybe a year for taping up kids & starving them, and physical violence resulting in wounds. Unless she’s crazy or an idiot she will plea. Also would not be surprised if Feds go after all of them for tax or ppp loan fraud.
I feel like Ruby is gonna get around 5 years before this all shakes out, I think Jodi may get much longer.

I agree. Part of me would like to think ruby wasn't the one tying her kids up.. maybe jodi just had her very brainwashed. Nonetheless I'm not excusing what ruby has done to those kids but also I hope their mother wasn't that vile

I was thinking that too, but I’m hoping the judge makes it at least long enough for all of her kids to be over 18.
She’s in Utah and is part of a Mormon community with huge support and will get lee way from the church. A slap on the wrist and she will be in some “community learning” program to eradicate the abusive behaviour.
That’s the million-dollar question. If Ruby takes a plea deal, I can see her getting away with 1-3 years. If she doesn’t, whether out of pride or culty brainwashing or whatever, I feel quite certain that a jury and judge would give her 10-15 years or more.
She will probably get probation if she takes a plea deal
