Polly want a Barbie review?
The Barbie movie was crypto anti woman, and crypto internalized misogynist which is why they wrongly and stupidly overcompensated men hating in the film instead of making the film less anti woman and less self hating. See here for more
My mom is correct, the Barbie movie is bad in part because Barbie having blonde hair instead of brown hair is lookist. My mom was always upset that Barbie was for too long initially default blonde instead of other hair and skin colors and Mattel diversifying the Barbie line was too little too late
"Once an equal parts fascinating and controversial Mattel toy, both loved and but more so hated—a tiny-waisted, vacuously smiling, slender doll designed like a straight-male fantasy—is now the complicated LIBERAL, bourgeois feminist symbol of faux empowerment in fake feminist Greta Gerwig's hands," The Wrap wrote. "But we aren't talking about an empty you-go-girl kind of empowerment here. That would be too simple-minded for Gerwig, whose articulate and accessible feminism has always been fiercely multifaceted and complex."
"Barbie is both a master's thesis on liberal, BOURGEOIS feminism and an Austin Powers-esque romp," The Globe and Mail noted.
Barbie was slammed as being “anti-men propaganda” by others. (movieweb)
Lauren Chen has a based and fair review of this Barbie film but I break with her a bit on the transgender thing. Unlike Lauren, I don't see a Transwoman being in this film as a big deal since they rightfully didn't explicitly say said Barbie is transgender. I mostly agree with Lauren's takes on the anti male themes of the film
She has a vagina because she is a real woman now.
I didn't think the trans actor was a distraction, I mean, it's about plastic dolls, it's a look a guy can do. I thought he was fine. He passed well and didn't distract. Honestly I found the plump Barbies more of a problem. I say this as a plump woman... they REALLY glossed over the whole Barbie and her body thing. I wish they had addressed this by making her a Happy to Be Me or a Lammily doll.
I thought the movie had WAY too much Ken for a movie about Barbies. The war/dance sequence was very long and my eyes were glazing over at that point. I think the movie should have nixed the Ken plot and stuck with the exploring the real world plot.
Barbie is a misgoynist movie in that it wrongly thinks it needs to tear men down to empower women. This is wrong because it overvalues men as objects needed to empower women (by tearing men down) when women can empower themselves without men including without tearing down men
I also echo some points here from Tomi Lahren on the Barbie movie"I’m Tomi Lahren, more next.
The highly anticipated Barbie movie is set to hit theaters at the end of the week and while some are tickled pink with excitement, some critics are calling the film “anti-male” noting that Ken and all the male characters depicted in the film are dumb, weak or sexist.
Now I think this criticism of this movie has gone a little far. It’s a movie about a doll, it’s not that deep.
But it does bring up a real cultural issue with modern day feminism.
Why does female empowerment have to mean bashing or emasculating men?
Can’t strong female leads be accompanied by strong male supporting roles?
The feminist movement has been hijacked by people who don’t even know what a woman is, by the way.
Dumping on or feminizing men doesn’t send a strong or positive message to young girls, either.
I don’t expect the Barbie Movie to do it all, but it’s disappointing that woke elements just can’t leave iconic storylines alone!
