In the real world though, that isn't how it works. People still see themselves in “tribes” and it's easy to “other” people who speak differently or look different. It is also convenient for people in power to play the nationalist card. So in reality you do get nationalistic communists, it's just that the pure communists wouldn't see them as true communists.

As with everything in politics, it's more complicated than you think.
